And no – it’s not because you’re quarantined and can’t buy toilet paper. That’s a tragedy all on its own.
Over the past few days, I’ve run a survey asking “Are You Happy.” The results have been pouring in and I’m beyond grateful for those of you who reached out or completed the survey…
I found three common trends as to why people are unhappy.
Here they are:
1. Freedom
This can be financial freedom or more time to do things you love.
If you lack freedom, like you have little control over how your time is spent, it will be tough to find happiness most days. This is why people with high-paying jobs who work 80 hours a week are often miserable.
To an extent, the way you make your money is often more important than how much money you make.
True fulfillment comes from making a difference by enriching the lives of others and not just your bank account.
2. Healthier Relationships
This may be cliché, but if you have few or no close relationships that enrich your life, or a majority are toxic, this is an easy way to feel miserable all the time.
They say we’re the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with. We need to make sure these 5 people are the right people.

3. Your Health (mentally or physically)
This is a pretty obvious one.
Your health is everything. If you don’t believe me, take a look at what’s going on in the world right now. There’s a national shortage of toilet paper because people have the flu and the entire world is panicking.
With that said, something you may not know is that one in four Americans suffer from a mental health problem in any given year.
Which means that someone in your immediate family, office, fantasy football league, or Coronavirus group chat, probably has a mental illness.
So, please Stop Calling Us Crazy
To be clear…
If you’re lacking in one or more of those areas, it’s virtually impossible to be content and happy. And I know that’s true because at one time in my life, I lacked in all three of those areas and almost lost my life because of it.
I think what we all really need is to find a purpose and a path that will make us truly happy.
Getting clear on what YOU want, and not settling for what life gives you, will ultimately bring you the most joy.
And I think I can help you do that.
This exercise is one of the very first things we do in my new Build The Life You Want Workbook.
It’s a quick but highly effective way to start figuring out what you want in life.
Here it is –
Go a quiet place, free from distraction and set a timer for 20 minutes. In that 20 minutes write out everything you want to do in your life before you die. And I mean everything.
Wanna climb Everest, write it down. Wanna make a million dollars playing video games, add it in there. It doesn’t matter how ludicrous it is. The idea is to get your mind exploring what’s out there and what you actually want.
By setting a timer for 20 minutes and allowing yourself to write freely, you will tap into your subconscious mind and write things you had no idea you wanted. And that’s where the magic starts to happen.
Things on this list will jump out at you like giant strobe lights on a paper and you’ll finally start to see the things you want.
And here’s the cool part…
Once your brain sees the things you want written down on paper, it automatically starts working to get them for you.
This is the reason when you talk about wanting a new car, you start seeing that car all over the road on your commute home.
Your subconscious is continuously working to give you the things you tell it to. We gotta make sure these are the right things.
As you complete this exercise, you may start to feel self-conscious or doubt your answers. STOP that.
This list is between you and you alone. Allow yourself to be free in this moment and write whatever pops in your head. Chances are, two are three things on this page are going to jump out at you.
I had a client of mine tell me he had never taken the time to write out what he wanted to do in life and doing this simple exercise reshaped his entire direction because he realized he had been chasing the wrong things.
This simple exercise is the beginning step to figuring out what YOU want and not settling for what life gives you. And I can’t wait to hear what it does for you.
